Awards

BEd teacher candidates are eligible for a number of scholarships and awards. These scholarships and awards recognize outstanding performance in coursework, practicum, and the BEd program overall. On the evening prior to graduation in November, award and scholarship winners are recognized at the Bachelor of Education awards ceremony.

Course instructors and faculty advisors may nominate teacher candidates, and TCs may nominate themselves for an award or scholarship by submitting completed nomination forms by the deadlines listed below.

BEd Awards List:

A. Hattrick Scholarship in Education

This scholarship has been endowed by Andrew Hattrick in honour of his family for students in the Bachelor of Education program, Secondary option. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Agnes Philipps Scholarship in Education

This scholarship has been endowed by Andrew Hattrick in honour of his family for students in the Bachelor of Education program, Secondary option. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.Scholarships have been endowed by the Estate of Agnes Philipps for students in the Faculty of Education who have completed or are enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program and have identified Visual Art as a teaching area. Recommendations are made by the Faculty of Education.

Alice V. Borden Memorial Prize

This scholarship is intended to encourage the dynamic spirit of dedication to excellence and integrity in learning and teaching which was exemplified in Alice V. Borden, Assistant Professor of Education who specialized in pre–school education at UBC from 1958 – 1971. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education to an outstanding student completing the first year of the program and proceeding to an Early Childhood specialization in the second year.

Alice V. Borden Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is given by her pupils and their parents, students, colleagues, friends and relatives, in memory of Alice V. Borden, 1908-1971, Assistant Professor of Education at the University of British Columbia, who taught and practiced pre-school education there from 1958-1971. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage the dynamic spirit of dedication to excellence and integrity in learning and teaching which they were privileged to experience in this rare person and skillful teacher. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education to an outstanding student whose teaching practicum is in Early Childhood (K-3).

Alishia Nora Harris Memorial Practicum Award

This practicum award has been endowed by family and friends in memory of Alishia Nora Harris (BFA 2003, BEd 2007), who loved teaching children through arts and was always thrilled to share everything she had learned from her studies at UBC. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education to a teacher candidate in the Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Program, with preference given to a teacher candidate who uses creative arts in his/her teaching practicum or whose concentration is expressive arts.

Alka Goel Prize in Business Education

This prize is awarded to the Business Education student with the highest standing in courses and practice teaching.

Amy E. Sauder NITEP Scholarship

Scholarships are made possible by a bequest from Amy Sauder and the Sauder Foundation, and are presented on the recommendations of Coordinators from all NITEP field centres.

Associate Dean of Teacher Education Prize

Prizes are offered annually by the Faculty of Education for graduating BEd candidates in elementary & middle years or secondary education who have shown consistent, outstanding performance in the area of inquiry. Such teacher candidates will have shown evidence of their exceptional ability to engage thoughtfully in educational study, to raise critical questions about their teaching practice as well as about the future, collective profession, and to situate those questions in their study of the scholarly or policy work and/or practices of other educators. Award-worthy teacher candidates will have expressed their ability to reflect upon and represent their learning experiences (during the BEd program, both in coursework and fieldwork) in light of a critical engagement with what it means to be a professional and to be engaged in a profession. Recommendations made by the Faculty of Education.

Aunna Currie Memorial Prize

This prize has been endowed in memory of Aunna Currie by her family. It is awarded to an outstanding student of the Bachelor of Education Secondary option who intends to teach Social Studies.

Barbara Mikulec Prize in Education

This prize has been endowed by Barbara Mikulec (BEd Elementary, 1969), for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education. The award is offered to students whose teaching practicum demonstrates success in teaching English as an Additional Language, and is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Bert McKay Memorial Award

This award has been endowed by friends and colleagues in memory of Bert McKay, one of the founders of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program at UBC. The award is for a graduating Indigenous Teacher Education Program student who has demonstrated commitment to the growth of First Nations education and has combined good academic standing with participation in university and community activities.

Bill Davison Memorial Prize

This prize has been endowed by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Bill Davison (1943-2004) for an outstanding Bachelor of Education (Secondary) student in language and literacy education. As an English instructor at UBC, Bill left a profound legacy through his commitment to inspiring student teachers to bring language and literature into their classrooms. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED).

Bimema Family Award in Teacher Education

Awards have been made available through an endowment established by supporters, faculty, and staff members of the Faculty of Education, for Bachelor of Education students who identify as Black and have achieved good academic standing. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Bryan R. Clarke Prize

This prize has been endowed to honour Bryan R. Clarke. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education to the graduating student who has the best academic record with deaf and hard of hearing children.

Chan Yuet Lan Scholarship

A scholarship has been made available through an endowment established by Tin Yick Lung in honour of his mother,  Chan Yuet Lan (aka Yuet Lan Lung). As an accomplished author, Chan Yuet Lan’s book on Chinese classics is catalogued in UBC’s Asian Library.  This endowed scholarship is not offered to BEd students every year as the award is made on a rotating basis by a variety of faculties offering undergraduate degrees.

CK Choi Scholarship in Secondary Education (entrance award)

These scholarships are awarded to outstanding students entering the Bachelor of Education, Secondary option.

Captain CY Wu Scholarship

Captain Chao Yu Wu and his wife Chiu Hui Wu, MSc, PhD have endowed this scholarship from the proceeds of a retirement allowance for Captain Wu from BC Hydro. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Charlotte Black Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been endowed by the British Columbia Home Economics Association Scholarships Foundation in memory of Charlotte Black, Director of the School of Home Economics at UBC from 1951 to 1965. The award is made to a student who is preparing for a teaching career in Home Economics Education.

Chitose Uchida Memorial Prize (entrance award)

Dr. M. Uchida has endowed this prize in memory of Chitose Uchida, BA, 1916, the first Japanese-Canadian to graduate from UBC in Arts. A teacher for many years in Alberta, Miss Uchida retired in Vancouver. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Faulty of Education to a student entering the Bachelor of Education program with a high standing in Arts courses.

Dean of Education Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students in each program option whose work in courses and in the extended practicum has been exemplary.

Don Wright Scholarship in Instrumental Music Education

With the aim of strengthening instrumental music in the schools, Dr. Don Wright endowed this scholarship to be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies to a student in the Music Education program who has demonstrated talent achievement in practical instrumental arranging and orchestration.

Don Wright Scholarship in Vocal/Choral Music Education

With the aim of strengthening vocal and choral music teaching in the schools, grades 5 to 10, Dr. Don Wright endowed this scholarship to be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies to a student in the Music Education program who has demonstrated a special aptitude for and exceptional teaching of vocal and choral music.

Donald C Gibbard Prize in Music Education

This prize has been endowed in honour of Donald C. Gibbard, who was for many years Chair of the Music Education Department. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies to an outstanding student in Music Education, in the Faculty of Education.

Donald and Ellen Poulter Scholarship

Scholarships are offered by Donald Poulter in memory of his wife, Ellen, who dedicated her career to inspiring and teaching students. The scholarships recognize undergraduate and graduate student achievement in the Faculty of Education. Recommendations are made by the Faculty and, in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Dora S Simpson Memorial Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded to needy and deserving students in the Faculty of Education.

Dorothy and Arthur Holt Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded to needy and deserving students in the Faculty of Education. Scholarships have been endowed by the late Arthur Wolstan Holt. One-third of the income is available to provide scholarships for students in the Faculty of Medicine. The remaining income is available for students in any year and faculty.

Dr. Clifford J. Anastasiou Scholarship in Education

Scholarships have been made available through an endowment established in memory of Dr. Clifford J. “Kip” Anastasiou (1929-2018) by his wife Joan D. Anastasiou (BA 1951, MA 1954, BLS 1969, MLS 1976) for outstanding Bachelor of Education students who have successfully completed at least one practicum in the BEd program, and have completed at least two upper-level courses in any of the following: Math, Chemistry, Physics or Biology.

Dr. Kip (BA 1952, MEd 1957, PhD) taught high school science before earning a PhD in Botany. He served as a UBC faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education from 1962 to 1994. Dr. Kip was integral in the development of international curriculum projects in environmental and health education and helped establish the Pacific Circle Consortium (PCC) to promote the collaboratively produced curriculum in the Pacific Region. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Edna Baxter Memorial Prize

This memorial prize serves as a tribute to Edna Baxter’s work as a teacher. It is awarded to an undergraduate of distinction in English Education: Children’s Literature.

Eleanore Vaines Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded in honour of Dr. Eleanore Vaines to students in the Faculty of Education, with preference given for students with a concentration or major in Home Economics. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty.

Elizabeth Kendall Scholarship in Education

This scholarship is awarded to students in English Education or Language Arts.

Elmore Ozard Art Education Prize

This prize is presented to students with notable achievement in visual art courses and who demonstrate excellent teaching potential.

Emily Longworth Memorial Award

In honour of the memory of Emily Longworth, a teacher candidate who was an inspiration and role model to fellow students, these awards are offered to those whose practica involve curricula or extra–curricular activites promoting multicultural understanding, healthy lifestyle, environmental awareness, and achieving full life potential.

George Brooks White Memorial Prize

An award endowed in memory of Mr. White in recognition of his dedication to the teaching of English, it is awarded to an outstanding student in Secondary English.

Globalink Research Award

Recipients can get $6,000 in GRA support for research collaborations with universities abroad. They can submit applications at any time but are encouraged to apply at least 16 weeks prior to their planned departure. Learn more

Gordon Sinclair Wilson Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been endowed through the behest of Anna Letitia Wilson, a UBC graduate. The award is offered to a Bachelor of Education student and is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.

Greg Quan Prize in Music Education

Prizes have been made available through an endowment established in honour of Gregory M. Quan (BEd 1998, MEd 2004) for outstanding Music Education students in the Bachelor of Education program who are passionate about inspiring and sharing a love of music. Preference will be given to students whose strength is in choral music.

Greg Quan teaches high school music, serving as Artistic Director of Choirs and Orchestras at Magee Secondary School in Vancouver. His work to foster mindfulness in his students is recognized by the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education. Central in his philosophy of music education is what he calls the “Choir Family”, where students sing in a safe and nurturing environment and develop close relationships based on trust and support of one another. In 2015 he was recognized as one of the top 100 graduates from the UBC Faculty of Education and in 2019 he was designated a UBC Faculty of Education distinguished alumni. This prize recognizes Greg’s dedication to inspire students through music education. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Hazel and Jack Grimmett Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded for outstanding students in the Elementary and Secondary options who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

Henry and Lily Kung Award in Education

An award endowed in honour of Henry and Lily Kung for a student in a Bachelor of Education degree program who have maintained satisfactory academic standing and who have participated in extra-curricular or volunteer activities or part-time employment. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.

Jack Young Prize

Jack Young, an outstanding science teacher in BC whose career extended over 56 years with 22 years in secondary schools, two in elementary schools and 19 at UBC in Science Education, has endowed this prize. It is awarded upon the recommendation of the Department of Science Education at the end of the extended practicum to two students demonstrating excellence in teaching middle years and secondary science.

Jean Barman Prize in Aboriginal Education (entrance award)

This prize is offered annually to students of Aboriginal ancestry pursuing graduate or teacher education degrees based on a project related to Aboriginal people. The award is named in honour of Dr. Jean Barman, an outstanding professor who taught and works in this area. The award is made on the recommendation of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program in consultation with the Associate Dean of Indigenous Education and in case of graduate students, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Jessie L. McLenaghen Scholarship in Home Economics

Scholarships have been made available through an endowment established in memory of Dr. Jessie L. McLenaghen (1883-1968), for outstanding students in the Faculty of Education who are preparing to become home economics teachers. Dr. McLenaghen was the Provincial Director of Home Economics in British Columbia from 1926 to 1946, and received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of British Columbia in 1956. This scholarship was established in recognition of Dr. McLenaghen’s leadership in the development of Home Economics in British Columbia. The scholarships are made on the recommendation by faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy.

JIMMAR Memorial Scholarship In Education

Scholarships have been endowed through a bequest by James Sigurd Eckman for students in the Faculty of Education.

Joan Ryan Award

This award has been endowed by friends and colleagues in recognition of Joan Ryan, one of the founders of NITEP, for a graduating NITEP student with good academic standing who has exemplified volunteerism, persistence and perseverance in completing the Bachelor of Education degree, while demonstrating commitment to the growth of First Nations education and participating in university and community activities. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education in consultation with the NITEP Committee.

Joan Tuey Scholarship in Early Childhood Education

Scholarships have been endowed by Leon and Joan Tuey for students concentrating in Early Childhood Education and are made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

John Francis Lidstone Scholarship

This scholarship is offered in alternate years to a student in either Education or Arts. The award is based on the recommendation of faculty.

Karen Hawkins Memorial Scholarship in Education

This scholarship honours the memory of Karen Lynn Nimmo Hawkins. Ms. Hawkins was an outstanding educator and inspirational leader with remarkable abilities to empower her students to discover, develop and share their unique talents. This award is made on the recommendation of the faculty.

Kathleen Elliott Memorial Scholarship

This endowment is in memory of Kathleen Elliot. The scholarship is awarded to an Elementary student who has demonstrated abilities in visual art and who will specialize in art education at the Elementary level.

Kay Norgan Meek Scholarship in Education

These awards are for outstanding students who demonstrate potential success in teaching.

Lena & Theo Thiessen Memorial Service Award in Education

Presented in memory of Margaret Thiessen’s parents who valued education. The “Lena and Theo Thiessen Memorial Service Award in Education Endowment Fund” (the “Thiessen Fund”) will support a service award offered to a student in the Bachelor of Education program who demonstrates leadership in contributing to society by volunteering in their community or in developing countries.

Leon Tuey Scholarship in Art Education

Scholarships have been endowed by Leon and Joan Tuey for students in Art Education. They are presented to Secondary students with a major or concentration in Art and are recommended by the Faculty of Education.

Margaret Cameron Scholarship in Teacher Education

A bequest from Margaret Cameron provides scholarships for students in various Bachelor of Education program options whose work has been recognized for excellence.

Marilyn Hunnings Memorial Scholarship in Education

Scholarships are presented to students in both Elementary and Secondary options on the basis of noteworthy achievement during the program.

Mary A Bryant Scholarship in Education (entrance award)

This award is offered to a student entering the Bachelor of Education Secondary program with a degree in Biology. It is made based upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Mary Amelia Thomson Prize in Early Childhood Education

This award is bestowed upon a student in the Early Childhood specialization with preference for those studying the role of education and peace in the lives of young children.

Mary Graham Holland Scholarship in Home Economics

This scholarship has been endowed by the British Columbia Home Economics Association Scholarships Foundation in memory of Charlotte Black, Director of the School of Home Economics at UBC from 1951 to 1965. The award is made to a student who is preparing for a teaching career in Home Economics Education. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Mathilde MacInnes Memorial Scholarship

Established by Mr. W. H. MacInnes as a memorial to his wife, Mathilde MacInnes, this award is presented to an outstanding student completing the first year of the two-year option.

Maxwell A. Cameron Award

The Maxwell A. Cameron Memorial Award is given annually by the BC Teachers’ Federation to teacher candidates who have completed their Bachelor of Education degree in elementary or secondary school teaching. The recipients should be students who stand out from their peers for having: a) initiated, worked, or participated in a project that created positive change globally or in their local community, and/or,  b. been actively involved in issues related to poverty, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, anti-racism, peace, global, or environmental issues. Along with nominations from the eight other BC teacher education programs, the UBC Faculty of Education’s BEd adjudication committee nominates UBC teacher candidates for this award. Nominations are selected from UBC teacher candidates with their degree already conferred.

Michael J Crooks Memorial Scholarship (entrance award)

This award was founded by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Mr. Crooks, a member of the UBC Department of Physics and co-founder of the BC Physics Olympiad. It is presented to a student entering the Secondary option preparing to teach Physics and is made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Mollie Cottingham Scholarship

This scholarship has been endowed in memory of former Faculty of Education member Mollie Cottingham. Miss E. Cottingham retired as Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Education in 1971 after being on staff for 13 years. It is awarded to a student who has successfully completed first year in Elementary or Secondary education, and preference is given to a student specializing in history within social studies.

Nancy Allan Memorial Scholarship

This award, recognizing Nancy Allan’s qualities as a performer and youth leader, is presented to a student in Music Education who best combines musicianship with the ability to communicate the spirit of music to others.

Native Northwest Award in Education for Indigenous Students (entrance award)

Awards have been made available annually through a gift from Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students enrolled in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP) program who have demonstrated good academic standing. Financial need may be considered. Preference will be given to students studying early childhood education.

Native Northwest was founded by Larry Garfinkel (BA 1975, BSW 1977) and Sandi Karmel (BSW 1977) in 1983 and creates products featuring the work of Indigenous artists. The Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund supports justice for those who continue to be impacted by Residential Schools by funding initiatives such as community wellness, learning, and connection to culture. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program.

Neville and Gladys Scarfe Memorial Prize

This award is bestowed in memory of former Dean Neville Scarfe and his wife, Gladys Scarfe. Dean Scarfe, regarded as one of the most distinguished scholars in the field of education when he was appointed to head the newly established Faculty of Education at UBC, continued to take an active interest in his academic discipline, geography, and more generally, in social studies. Made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education, the prize is directed to an outstanding student who demonstrates significant achievement in teaching social studies.

Otto and Marie Pick Award in Education

Awards have been made available annually through a gift from the Remembering Otto & Marie Pick Charitable Foundation, for Bachelor of Education students who have achieved good academic standing and demonstrated community service, volunteerism and/or leadership skills. Financial need may be considered. Otto and Marie Pick immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1938 prior to the beginning of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Europe. They were welcomed to Canada with an outpouring of kindness from their neighbours, and through diligence and hard work they established a home in Ontario and later a thriving seed company.

This award was established to honour the perseverance Otto and Marie demonstrated as immigrants in a new country and to encourage the next generation of students pursuing a teaching career. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Outstanding Community Field Experience Award

This award is presented to Elementary & Middle Years and Secondary students whose work during the community field experience identified them as teachers of exceptional promise. Recipients of this award receive a distinctive pin.

Outstanding Practicum Award

This award is presented to Elementary & Middle Years and Secondary students whose work during the extended practicum identified them as teachers of exceptional promise. Recipients of this award receive a distinctive pin.

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship in Education

These scholarships are for students in both Elementary and Secondary options who have good academic records and who have shown an ability and aptitude for teaching. It is provided by the UBC Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

Quan Family Music Educator Award

Awards have been made available through an endowment established by the Quan Family for students in the Bachelor of Education program who have demonstrated a passion and extraordinary capability for music education with youth in a group environment. Candidates will have volunteer or extracurricular involvement in music education that includes band, choral, orchestra or jazz ensembles at the secondary level. Preference will be given to candidates who possess the capacity for multiple musical fields. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Rob Gray Memorial Award (entrance award)

Endowed as a memorial to Rob Gray who died while still studying in Multicultural and Minority Education, this award is presented to a NITEP student.

Robert J. Mitchell Memorial Award in Education (entrance award)

Entrance awards have been made available annually through a gift from Yvonne Mitchell (BEd 1994, Diploma in Education 1997, MEd 2006) in memory of Robert J. Mitchell (1946-2019) for mature students entering the Bachelor of Education program.  Preference will be given to students with and interest and/or back ground in Special Education. Robert was an elementary school teacher for many years, teaching with both compassion and dedication. He was especially committed to supporting students with learning disabilities.

Robert W. Sterling Memorial NITEP Award

This award and certificate has been endowed in memory of Robert W. Sterling by his family, friends and colleagues. Robert Sterling pioneered many firsts in the field of First Nations education. His career spanned more than 20 years and reflected his diverse interests and intellectual pursuits. An alumnus of UBC, Robert’s accomplishments were many, but none prouder than his involvement in the formation and development of NITEP.

The award is made to the student in the NITEP graduating class (spring or previous fall) who has made the greatest contribution to NITEP throughout his/her years in the program and who exemplifies Robert Sterling’s qualities of leadership. The award is made on the recommendation of NITEP.

Sam Black Prize

Offered by the West Vancouver Sketch Club, this prize is awarded to an outstanding student taking courses in art education, in the Faculty of Education.

Sandra Cawley Award in Education for Indigenous Students (entrance award)

A financial award has been made available annually through a gift from the Y.P. Heung Foundation in honour of Sandra Cawley (BCom 1981) for a First Nations, Inuit or Métis student of Canada in the Bachelor of Education program who has achieved good academic standing and demonstrated leadership and community involvement.

Sandra developed a very successful career in real estate appraisal and land use, specializing in the valuation of commercial real estate. She has given back to UBC by serving as the Vice-Chair of the UBC Board of Governors and as a Director of UBC properties Trust. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Sharp Family NITEP Graduation Prize

This prize has been endowed for the student standing at the head of the NITEP graduating class for the Bachelor of Education (Elementary) degree. The recommendation is made by the Faculty of Education and will consider students graduating in the spring or in the previous fall.A financial award has been made available annually through a gift from the Y.P. Heung Foundation in honour of Sandra Cawley (BCom 1981) for a First Nations, Inuit or Métis student of Canada in the Bachelor of Education program who has achieved good academic standing and demonstrated leadership and community involvement.

Dr. Shirley Anne Henslowe Scholarship in Education

Scholarships have been made available through an endowment established by an estate gift from Dr. Shirley Anne Henslowe (1929-2017) for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Education. Dr. Henslowe (BA, BLS 1965, MEd 1972, EdD 1977) taught in the Bella Coola, Victoria, Surrey and Vancouver school districts. While a graduate student at UBC, she was awarded a Killam Doctoral Scholarship. After receiving her PhD, Dr. Henslowe taught for ten years in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge.

The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education, and in the case of a graduate student, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Shirley M. Wong Award in Education

This award has been endowed by the Canadian Chapter of the International Society for Business Education for an outstanding student in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Program with preference for a student whose major or concentration is Business Education. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Sonia Craddock Memorial Prize

This prize has been endowed in memory of Sonia Craddock, elementary teacher, reading researcher, teacher educator, and author of children’s literature. It is offered to a Faculty of Education student who achieves distinction in a children’s literature course. Preference is given to a student who uses children’s literature effectively in a teaching practicum. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Stella Shopland Memorial Prize

Endowed in memory of Stella Shopland by her friends and associates, this prize serves to mark the esteem and affection in which she was held by her colleagues and students. In tribute to her special interest in children’s literature, this prize is awarded to a student in the Faculty of Education with outstanding achievement in a children’s literature course.

Dr. Thomas A Howitz Prize in Math Education

Thomas Howitz served UBC for 20 years. This prize is awarded in his memory to an outstanding student in Mathematics Education, made on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education.

Tina Christopoulos Crudo Scholarship in Education

The Tina Christopoulos Crudo Scholarship in Education is offered annually for a student in any elementary or primary cohort of the teacher education program who has a focus on primary education and demonstrates academic excellence. The scholarship is created in loving memory of Tina Christopoulos Crudo, who was a passionate teacher and who had a positive impact on countless students during her 20-year career as an educator. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Tsutae and Hanako Sato Prize

This award commemorates 100 years of Japanese immigration to Canada. It is awarded to a student of Japanese ancestry in the Elementary & Middle Years option whose work has been exemplary.

UBC Alumni NITEP Scholarship (entrance award)

One or more scholarships have been endowed by the UBC Alumni Association to assist students in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program. The awards are made on the recommendation of the NITEP program coordinators. Grades obtained in courses at Indigenous Teacher Education Program field centres will be considered.

University Women’s Club of Vancouver Dr. Evelyn Fenwick Scholarship (entrance award)

This scholarship is the gift of the University Women’s Club of Vancouver, is offered to a woman student who is a graduate of another faculty entering the Bachelor of Education program, or is entering the final year of a Bachelor of Education Dual Degree program. It is awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the Faculty of Education, is best qualified in terms of her personal qualities and academic record.

This scholarship has been endowed by the University Women’s Club of Vancouver Trust Fund for Education for a student entering the Faculty of Education specializing in Mathematics. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education and in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

University of BC Alumni NITEP Scholarship

Awards are offered to assist students in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP). These awards are made on the recommendation of coordinators based upon academic achievement in the field centres.

Prizes have been endowed by UBC Alumni and friends to provide academic recognition and support for female students majoring in technology studies within the Bachelor of Education Program. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty to women who have achieved academic excellence as well as career success in the technology field.

Verna J. Kirkness (Ni-jing-jada) Award (entrance award)

Prizes have been endowed by UBC Alumni and friends to provide academic recognition and support for female students majoring in technology studies within the Bachelor of Education Program. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty to women who have achieved academic excellence as well as career success in the technology field.

Verna J. Kirkness (Ni-jing-jada) Award (entrance award)

These awards have been endowed by friends, colleagues and the University of British Columbia in honour of Dr. Verna J. Kirkness (Ni-jing-jada), the founding director of the First Nations House of Learning and the Ts”kel Graduate Studies Program. The awards are offered to students of First Nations ancestry in Education. Preference is given to students involved in academic projects or research that will advance the cause of Aboriginal education. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education in consultation with the First Nations House of Learning and, in the case of graduate students, the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

W.R.F. Seal Award

Presented to the student, in the Technology Studies Education General Program, achieving the highest average in prerequisite and required coursework, prior to being eligible to enter the teaching profession. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia. This award has been established in recognition of the outstanding leadership W.R.F. Seal has given in the field of Industrial Education. His energy and drive, his well-defined philosophy of education, and his meticulous craft work serve as examples for students and faculty of Technology Education, UBC.
