Returning to the Bachelor of Education Program

The Bachelor of Education program must be completed within four years of the date of original admission. If you have been absent from the program and wish to return, please read the procedures below.

Voluntary Withdrawal
No BEd credits earned

Who:

You are in this category if your initial withdrawal occurred before the end of Winter Term 1 (September to December) and no BEd credits were earned.

Action:

  1. Contact the Teacher Education Office to schedule a meeting with a program manager. As all situations are unique, a TEO program manager will be able to advise you on the specifics regarding your withdrawal and potential return to the BEd program.
  2. If there are extenuating circumstances which have led to or forced your withdrawal, you will be provided with an official action plan outlining the process of returning to the BEd program. This may include one or more required activities which you will have to complete prior to the resumption of your BEd program.
  3. In many cases there may be no extenuating circumstances which have led to your decision to withdraw. In these cases, if you wish to return to the UBC BEd program, you may be required to submit a new BEd application for a future program cycle. This would include a resubmission of references and all related documents. In this case, admission is not guaranteed. Contact the Teacher Education Office to schedule a meeting with an admissions officer if you have questions about the application process. More details regarding admission can be found here.
  4. If offered admission, you will be required to provide authorization and payment for a new criminal record check. Details for completing this will be provided in your admission letter.

Note: the application deadline is usually in mid-January. Please check the TEO website to confirm.

Voluntary Withdrawal
After BEd credits have been earned / After first completed semester

Who:

You voluntarily withdrew from the BEd program after the first term of the program and/or during the extended practicum.

In these cases, you are eligible to return to continue your program as soon as the next academic year. For those who choose to wait longer, the return must be early enough to satisfy program completion within the four-year time frame required for BEd program completion.

For example, a student who began their program in September 2021 would be eligible to return to complete the program in September 2022, September 2023 or September 2024.

If you do not complete the program within the four-year time frame, you will forfeit all previously completed credits and you will be removed from the BEd program. Any subsequent return will require a new application to the Bachelor of Education for a future application cycle, including resubmission of references and all related documents.

More details regarding admission can be found here.

Action:

  1. Contact the Teacher Education Office to schedule a meeting with a program manager to discuss guidelines for reinstatement. After this meeting you will be provided with an official action plan outlining the process of returning to the BEd program. This may include one or more required activities which you will have to complete prior to the resumption of your BEd (see step 3).
  2. Complete and submit the Reinstatement to the Bachelor of Education Program Application Form.
  3. Provide information about additional courses or other steps you have taken that will demonstrate your readiness to resume the program (if applicable).
  4. If necessary, arrange a follow up interview with a program manager to discuss your reinstatement.
  5. If your reinstatement is approved, pay the registration deposit for the session in which you will begin again (Winter or Summer).

Note: the deadline to apply for reinstatement is July 15. Individual applications will not be reviewed until after this date. Thank you for your patience throughout this process. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

This only applies to individuals who began the BEd program no more than three years previous to the date of desired reinstatement.

  1. Contact the Teacher Education Office to schedule a meeting with a program manager to discuss the possibility for reinstatement. This may include a review of the official action plan provided to you when you were last in the BEd program (see Step 3).

  3. Provide information about additional courses or other steps you have taken that will demonstrate your readiness to resume the program.

  6. Reinstatement is not automatic. Each application will be considered on its merits.
