In addition to the academic and admission requirements, all candidates wishing to teach in French and be admitted to the French specialization of the teacher education program at UBC must demonstrate proficiency in the language by June 30 prior to the start of the BEd program. Applicants can show evidence of French proficiency through one of these means:
- One of the following tests:
- Diplôme approfondi de langue française (DALF)
- Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF)
- Test de connaissance du français (TCF)
- Test d’évaluation de français (TEF)
- Test de français international (TFI)
- Any other French proficiency standardized test approved by the TEO
- A transcript attesting to successful post-secondary studies (one-year equivalent of full-time studies minimum, i.e. 30 credits) at an institution where French is the language of instruction (Example: Université de Montréal, but not UBC).

The levels of French proficiency correspond to the following program options:

Placement into Core French, French Immersion or Francophone Practicums is at the discretion of French specialists in the Faculty of Education. Candidates qualifying at a high B2 level or above will be considered for the widest range of French practicum placement options.

For those interested in taking the DELF/DALF, the exam is offered in March, June, or November and can be completed in Canada, or at an international location.
