Junior and Senior High English/Social Teacher | Teaching in Northern Alberta Secondary Option (English, 2013)
After completing my BEd in August 2013 with a specialization in Secondary English, I began working at a school on a First Nations reserve in northern Alberta. I started applying for jobs immediately after completing my practicum and my first interview ended up being the job I accepted! I knew I wanted to have my own classroom and this small school seemed like the perfect place to start my career. Atikameg School is a K-12 school with around 200 students. During the 2013/14 school year, I taught English for Grades 7-12, as well as Social Studies 8. This year, I will be teaching English 9-12, as well as Social 9, Social 11, and Resource 12.
My life here is all about school! From this rural community, I drive 140km (one way!) to buy groceries. I love it here and my students are amazing. I am involved in coaching basketball, running an after-school Fitness Club, writing and publishing the school’s monthly newsletter, and creating the school yearbook, which was a first for our school last year. The opportunities for growth as an educator here are endless and I would recommend this experience to any new teacher. While the isolation can certainly be a struggle at times, I know that I am making a difference in the lives of my students.
