Acts of Giving & Learning in commemoration of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day 2024

Orange Shirt Day, September 30, is a day to honour and uphold Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, and to commemorate those who didn’t return home.

The Teacher Education Office invites students, staff, and faculty to take part in a small act of giving in commemoration of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. The UBC community is invited to drop by the Neville Scarfe Building foyer to make an “Every Child Matters” orange shirt button.

Pre-made buttons will also be available for donation. (The act of making a button for others to keep is also seen as a way of giving.) Resources on the residential school system and reconciliation from the Legacy of Hope Foundation will be available to view as well.

Book Giveaway: Enter our draw to win a book written by an Indigenous-Canadian author. There will be multiple prizes. Stop by our table to fill out an entry form. Open to all.

Sharing your thoughts: As an act of reconciliation, educators can incorporate the First Peoples Principles of Learning in their teaching. How will you take action? We invite teacher candidates to write down their thoughts on an orange paper heart, which will be provided at the table. The hearts will be collected and displayed in the foyer.
