Peer Mentors in Teacher Education

Peer mentors work alongside TEO Learning Design Manager, Dr. Sonya Woloshen to support teacher candidates in all UBC teacher education program options. Their mentorship is aimed at assisting students set and meet their goals while planning for practicum in K-12 schools. They are available to meet teacher candidates at various times during the day, after school, and on weekends by appointment. Appointments can be held online via Zoom or in person. Teacher candidates can reserve appointments with peer mentors by selecting consult times on the Navigating BEd Canvas Calendar.

In addition to one-on-one consults, the peer mentors host a variety of events, including online and in-person workshops on topics relevant to K-12 teaching such as decolonizing math, lesson & unit planning, and STEAM topics. They also host a monthly event in the Scarfe Foyer, where they share information on topics of interest and relevant to K-12 teaching. The peer mentors and learning design manager provide useful resources at these Scarfe Foyer Sessions and treats!

The peer mentors publish articles on the Scarfe Digital Sandbox Blog as another resource for teacher candidates. This publicly available space is an area for teacher candidates to find resources to support their learning and planning. A few of the latest articles written by peer mentor Daniel Gallardo this year include: “The Critical Role of Digital Literacy – Teaching in a World surrounded by “Fake News” & “Decolonizing Maps”.
