In Memory of Emily Longworth

On February 3, 2007, Emily Longworth (BEd Elementary, 2006), her friend Lauren Kipic and 8 others died in a hotel fire in Punta Arenas, Chile.

In Emily’s honour, a fund was established to support teacher candidates to create curriculum enrichment and/or extra-curricular activities for their students that promote multicultural understanding, a healthy lifestyle, environmental awareness and inspire students to achieve their full potential in life.

These were goals embedded in Emily’s own creative curricular and extra-curricular endeavours as a teacher-in-training, for which she often used her own funds due to shortages in school budgets and poverty among her students.

In memory of Emily, a total of 11 BEd Elementary recipients will be engaged in 19 projects funded by the Emily Longworth Memorial Award grants, impacting 455 elementary-aged students this year.
