The New Teacher Mentoring Project brings together UBC’s Teacher Education Office, the BC Ministry of Education, the BC School Superintendents Association and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation as partners in an integrated system of support for inducting, developing, and retaining teachers in this province. The BC Education Plan acknowledges the complexity of teachers’ roles and identifies mentoring as an integral means of supporting ongoing professional learning, both in teachers’ formative years and throughout their career.

The New Teacher Mentoring Project (NTMP) is built upon the mounting research confirming how beginning teachers and those new to their role thrive under the mentorship of experienced colleagues, greatly improving both their effectiveness in the classroom and satisfaction with their work. Mentoring is a central component in helping to build and strengthen a professional culture of collegiality, collaboration, and learning within schools and districts. This project is serving to expand sustainable mentorship programs throughout British Columbia’s educational landscape to support and value the process of inducting new teachers into the profession.

“Mentoring others has helped me look at my own practice and think carefully about why I do certain things — it has opened my mind to other possibilities.”

Districts involved in the project are Haida Gwaii, Kamloops/Thompson, Kootenay/Columbia, North Okanagan-Shuswap, Peace River North, Peace River South, Revelstoke, Sea to Sky, Sooke, Stikine, and Vancouver Island West.

The second annual Mentorship Institute will be held at UBC July 2-4 and aims to continue building a provincial network of leaders in mentorship.

“I am truly amazed by the powerhouse of people within and outside of our district whom I have met through this process.”
