Elementary & Middle Years Programme Elementary & Middle Years Schedule

Keynote Speaker

Jan Unwin, Superintendent of Graduation and Student Transitions, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Advanced Education
9:00 a.m. | Scarfe Room 100

Jan Unwin will be discussing the following:

We know the world has changed at an accelerated rate and we owe it to our children to do whatever we need to do to create an educational experience that prepares them for an ever-changing world.

This will mean a transformational change in the what, why, and how we do “schooling”.

We must move from knowledge to understanding and from answers to questions. In order to engage students in their learning we must offer choice and flexibility and assist them in finding and pursuing their passion with purpose and in a personalized way.

How can we systemically and strategically use the redesigned curriculum and all parts of the transformation agenda to create a different educational experience for children supported by what we now know about teaching and learning?

School District Human Resources Representatives Panel

Pete Nuij, District Principal Human Resources, Surrey School District 36
Diego Testa, District Principal Human Resources, Chilliwack School District 33
Adrian Keough, Director of Instruction, Specialty Programs, Vancouver School Board, SD 39
1:00 p.m. | Scarfe Room 100

In this discussion, panel members will talk about what they look for in the hiring process, advice for your application, ways in which your practicum, your practicum report and your connection with the school community are important and what are some of the policies around being a Teacher on Call in school districts. Other topics will also be discussed and there will be time for teacher candidates to ask questions of the panel.
