Due to COVID-19, teacher candidates in the 2019/20 Bachelor of Education program have had to quickly adapt their teaching and learning styles through the use of online platforms. We are showcasing some of the wonderful examples of projects created by them as part of the community field experience.

- What is the name of the community partner or group you are working with?

- What is your project’s subject area(s)?
- Physical and health education
- Tell us about your project!
- My CFE project involves the creation of interactive lessons which would elicit student responses and reflection. I decided to make five short videos teaching five basic skills of soccer that students can practice. I gave an example of the skill by naming the components, describing them, demonstrating them, and then telling the students to actively practice the skills at home.
Two videos were uploaded over the span of two weeks and the final video was uploaded on the third week after. I have a background in photography and video editing, in addition to playing various sports, so I wanted to blend teaching practices to my skills with video editing and physical and health education to form a selection of videos for students to watch and learn from. I believe that my background in communications and digital media has been an advantage, in terms of the style and format of my soccer tutorials.
- Did you face any particular challenges in the planning, making or delivery of this project?
- Some of the challenges which I faced initially were how to place the camera. Angles concerned me because I wanted the videos to catch the viewers attention without them getting bored. As a result, I felt that my first two videos were not as appealing as the next three. However, this was a part of the learning process for me, so I learned from them and utilized that knowledge to create more attractive videos that followed. Though number 1-2 were done well, I feel that 3-5 showed the progression of more experience from the creations of 1-2.
- How was the project received? Did anything surprise you about the outcome?
- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my practicum was partially done online through Microsoft Teams. However, this made no difference in terms of the delivery of my physical and health education videos. I was humbled to receive good feedback from my school advisor, faculty advisor, and my grade 3 students. I was a bit surprised by the outcome because I tend to be quite hard on myself. In the end, everything worked out well.
- Can you tell us about a highlight of creating this remote lesson plan?
- The highlights of creating this remote lesson plan are that I was able to get the support of one of my friends to be a special guest on my videos from 3-5. These videos had shown the adaptability of having a partner practice skills with us, while still maintaining social distance due to the response of COVID-19. I feel that my last few videos out of my set showcased an ability to adapt to a situation while having fun at the same time.
- What media did you use to create your project?
- I used a video editing software called filmora9.
