Due to COVID-19, teacher candidates in the 2019/20 Bachelor of Education program have had to quickly adapt their teaching and learning styles through the use of online platforms. We are showcasing some of the wonderful examples of projects created by them as part of the community field experience.

- Tell us about your project!
- I created lessons incorporating place-based education in remote social studies education. Given the current situation, I wanted to provide these lessons as a way for students to disconnect from their devices (however briefly) and explore their neighbourhoods and other meaningful places. These lessons are designed so that they can be modified for multiple grade levels and learning outcomes. Students do not need to be connected to the internet to complete the assignment, which helps alleviate the inequity in technology-availability.
- Did you face any particular challenges in the planning, making or delivery of this project?
- One challenge that arose was how to create lessons that could be modified for all grade levels and accessibility to technology. The lessons I created are not perfect, and some do rely on technology more than others. However, it was a good learning experience to try to keep the objectives simple, knowing that each student had different situations and needs at home.
- How was the project received? Did anything surprise you about the outcome?
- The lessons were received well from those I shared it with. I originally intended to share it with my SA and a few other teachers, but I felt that sharing it with a wider audience would be far more helpful.
- Can you tell us about a highlight of creating this remote lesson plan?
- A highlight of creating this was showcasing geographic thinking in social studies education. Even though it isn’t an area I studied extensively, the courses I have taken in geography really changed the way I viewed history and the social sciences. It was a pleasure to really focus into geographic thinking.
