Due to COVID-19, teacher candidates in the 2019/20 Bachelor of Education program have had to quickly adapt their teaching and learning styles through the use of online platforms. We are showcasing some of the wonderful examples of projects created by them as part of the community field experience.

- What is the name of the community partner or group you are working with?
- The online sewing community
- What is your project’s subject area(s)?
- Home Economics (Textiles and Fashion Design)
- Tell us about your project!
- I created a personal sewing blog and an Instagram account that will document me making several clothing items for my summer capsule wardrobe. This blog will include pictures and write-up for how I approached each project, where I bought my fabric online, and tips for starting the project. This blog will hopefully be a source of inspiration or entertainment for home sewers (particularly those who live in Canada as all the fabric I bought is from companies that are Canadian and only ship to Canada and/or the USA). The fabrics I chose have kept sustainability and sourcing in mind. Part of my project will be to be promote social distancing and using sewing to get through it.
- Did you face any particular challenges in the planning, making or delivery of this project?
- I’ve found it quite time-consuming so far because I have to sew the clothes, take photos of myself wearing it to post onto social media and my blog, and then write a blog post on what I sewed. I also had to learn how to make a blog (which wasn’t too hard). I find taking photos and posting those photos to be the hardest part because I struggle with my confidence in how I look sometimes but I’m still going to go through with it.
- How was the project received? Did anything surprise you about the outcome?
- So far my project’s been pretty well received by my faculty advisor Joe Tong and my friends. I’m starting to connect with other sewers too (although this is still very early stages because I’ve only done one blog post and one Instagram post).
- Can you tell us about a highlight of creating this remote lesson plan?
- The highlight of creating this remote lesson plan was engaging with my friends that have read my blog post and seen my instagram post. It’ll make me happy if I can inspire anyone to start a new hobby during quarantine, even if it’s nothing close to sewing related.
- What media did you use to create your project?
- I used WordPress.com and Instagram.
