Due to COVID-19, teacher candidates in the 2019/20 Bachelor of Education program have had to quickly adapt their teaching and learning styles through the use of online platforms. We are showcasing some of the wonderful examples of projects created by them as part of the community field experience.
Connie Chan & Bryan Lopez BEd Secondary (Physical Education & Home Economics)
- What is the name of the community partner or group you are working with?
- UBC Bachelor of Education teacher candidates
- What is your project’s subject area(s)?
- Health and outdoor physical education and home economics
- Tell us about your project!
- We have created a blog and communication platform to support teacher candidates by helping them maintain and improve their overall wellness. The blog focuses on the three particular domains of wellness: physical, emotional/mental and social/community. We will be updating the blog and providing resources for fellow teacher candidates on a bi-weekly basis. We want to create a professional space where teacher candidates have an opportunity to discuss different topics within wellness; we have therefore included bi-weekly “Zoom” check ins. This will be a platform where other TCs can share their resources and ideas with others.
- Did you face any particular challenges in the planning, making or delivery of this project?
- The biggest challenge we faced was putting together a blog site. Neither of us have a strong background within that field. Fortunately, we were able to get a fellow colleague, Eric, to assist us in creating our blog. Also, he helped us navigate the UBC Qualtrics tool and ensure we abide by the FIPPA regulations. Another challenge was being able to access a Zoom account to host many people. We would like to thank Dr. McTavish with her support and Joel Kobylka with providing us with the appropriate resources.
- How was the project received? Did anything surprise you about the outcome?
- The project has been well perceived upon the proposal stage. We would like to thank Dr. McTavish for supporting our project. As well as our Curriculum Instructor, Steve McGinley, in assisting us with resources and providing feedback to our blog.
- Can you tell us about a highlight of creating this remote lesson plan?
- A highlight creating this lesson plan is that we have an opportunity to reach a larger audience. We would like to share the resources and information from our teaching experiences but more importantly from what we learned from our H.O.P.E. and home economic instructors. Another highlight, is being able to create a platform to build a collaborative community during remote learning for Teacher Candidates.
- What media did you use to create your project?
- We used UBC blogs – WordPress. We utilized Qualtrics for surveys. Lastly we are using Zoom as a platform as a means of communication for bi-weekly check ins.
