Due to COVID-19, teacher candidates in the 2019/20 Bachelor of Education program have had to quickly adapt their teaching and learning styles through the use of online platforms. We are showcasing some of the wonderful examples of projects created by them as part of the community field experience.

- We created the Outside Guide to provide hands-on, place-based activities for the Highlands Elementary community.

- Tell us about your project!
- The Outside Guide: Highlands Elementary provides an introduction to place-based learning for the school, teachers and families in the area. Our hope is that the community will use this resource as a starting point for creating outdoor experiences for their class or family.
We designed and adapted activities centred around 8 landmarks and locations near Highlands Elementary. Once the class or family is at the identified location, we’ve provide thoughtful and engaging activities for everyone to participate. Our resource includes has a bright and handmade local map, lesson briefs, full lessons, supplementary resources, and curricular competencies. We’ve provided a hard copy of this resource to all of the teachers at Highlands Elementary and are in the process of exploring ways to share online.

- The main challenge was finding the time to create a meaningful resources while balancing practicum responsibilities.
- Can you tell us about a highlight of creating this remote lesson plan?
- A highlight was being able to give back to the school, teachers and students who generously hosted us for our practicum.
