Student Life Coordinator

This exciting position will give the role holder the opportunity to develop and implement a successful and diverse student life program at Columbia College.

The role is dedicated to facilitating international students’ adjustment to Canadian College life by supporting their needs through offering a diverse and appropriate program of events and activities. These activities will assist students in balancing their academic focus with a positive range of community building and fun opportunities.

Enjoying working with international students, high aspirations for student life at Columbia College and the ability to build positive relationships and engage all demographics across the College population are essential to success within this role.

General Accountability

Reporting to the Student Services Manager, the Student Life Coordinator is accountable for the planning and provision of extra-curricular events and activities in order to ease students’ adjustment to Canadian college life and encourage networking amongst our diverse student population.

The Student Life Coordinator’s primary role is to enrich the Columbia College student experience, encourage participation in all aspects of student life, and foster experiences to allow students to be successful in their time here.

Nature and Scope of Role

Planning, promoting and building engagement within a varied extra-curricular program

The Student Life Coordinator will be responsible for the following:

  • Working individually, and with student leaders, staff and faculty to plan, budget, administer and deliver an annual program of events and activities each semester which meet the needs of the student population at Columbia College, including students attending our North Campus. The Activity & Event program will take the form of:
    • Weekly campus events and college-wide competitions
    • Social events and club activities at the College
    • Termly Health & Wellness weeks, and other initiatives run by the Student Services department
    • Casual/competitive off-site sports opportunities
  • Collaborating with individuals and agencies outside of the College to bring activities and information to students.
  • Establishing, supervising and training a network of volunteers to serve both on campus and in the community, and tracking their commitment.
  • Tracking statistics of student involvement in activities and events to assess effectiveness and popular appeal.
  • Researching best practices and trends in the student life sector and ensuring that all programs reflect the diversity of Columbia College students.
  • Supporting other Student Services related events such as Orientation, Graduation & Awards ceremonies, etc.

Developing the profile of the Student Life Program

It is the responsibility of the Student Life Coordinator to develop the profile of the program to both current and prospective students. Promotion methods will include:

  • Word of mouth promotion to students.
  • Production of promotional posters, adverts and events for around the campus.
  • Use of college e-mail, portal and college website.
  • Spending time at the North Campus each week to ensure that this student population is engaged in the program.
  • Dissemination of relevant opportunities to the Communications Coordinator and self-publishing on relevant social media.

Networking with the Student Population & Staff

The Student Life Coordinator position will require active interaction with the student population, both in and around the campus and within the program itself. The role holder will also need to network and collaborate with all staff and faculty to create and promote a broad and successful student life program.

Managing social spaces, storage areas and equipment

The Student Life Coordinator is responsible for managing the following areas, to ensure that they are best serving the needs of our students:

  • 3rd & 4th floor student lounges
  • Storage area
  • Purchasing, maintenance and storage of any equipment related to events and activities that are run for students.

Other responsibilities

  • Dealing with enquiries at the Student Services reception when Student Services Assistants are not present.
  • Supporting the Student Services Manager with administrative tasks as required.
  • Any other duties as determined by the Student Services Manager.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or some experience at the post-secondary level
  • Experience in recruiting and engaging young people to participate in activities
  • Ability to relate to students in a manner that engenders trust and confidence
  • Ability to inspire others
  • Ability to identify and implement innovative and effective programs that meet the needs of students
  • Ability to use social media to promote events and activities
  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities
  • Excellent organizational and budgeting skills
  • Able to work with minimum supervision as well as within a team
  • Effective time management skills and willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
