NITEP is a UBC Bachelor of Education Program (Elementary or Secondary) that builds upon Aboriginal identity and cultural heritage while preparing persons of Aboriginal ancestry to be effective educators for public, band and independent schools in BC.
How does it differ from the regular UBC Elementary or Secondary BEd program?
NITEP teacher candidates are admitted to the Faculty of Education in the first year of university studies. NITEP teacher candidates take arts, science and education courses in each year of their degree program.
The first two years are offered through a regional field centre so that teacher candidates can remain near their home community to maintain their family and cultural connections.
NITEP includes the same basic elementary teacher education program courses requirements, but in a different sequence. Also, NITEP requires 12 credits of courses that focus on Aboriginal education theory, content and pedagogy. These courses take place of some program electives.
