Diploma in Education (DEDU)

A UBC Diploma in Education (DEDU) is a 30-credit UBC-conferred post-degree diploma which provides teachers and others qualified with specialization coursework for advancement in positions and in qualification categories.

Diplomas are completed within a five-year time frame. If students begin their coursework as an unclassified student, they may advance transfer 12 non-UBC credits, or 18 UBC credits into their Diploma program.

For further details on advance transfer, please see Admissions: Transfer Credit and Advanced Standing.

Certificate in Education

In some specialty areas, there may be 15–credits of specific courses which comprise a departmentally-issued (not UBC-conferred) Certificate. When you view the professional development specializations you are interested in, available certificate opportunities will be mentioned.

UBC Certificate in Education programs are offered both regionally (in person) and online. For a list of current certificate programs, visit External Programs & Learning Technologies.

Certificate programs are 15-credits, and provide professionals with post–degree credits to provide a basic foundation in an area of specialization, including two graduate certificates. You may combine two 15–credit certificate programs to gain the 30-credits required for advancement to TQS Category 5+.

Professional Development Summer Institutes in Education

UBC's Faculty of Education now offers several Summer Institutes for you to take individually, or as electives in your Certificate or Diploma in Education program.
