WKTEP

West Kootenay Teacher Education Program (WKTEP) is located
in Castlegar, BC, at the Selkirk College campus.

Twelve-month options of the Elementary and Secondary (selected specializations only) Bachelor of Education programs are available. WKTEP focuses on preparing teachers for rural and small school settings in recognition that rural communities offer exciting educational challenges for teachers.

We offer the full complement of UBC’s BEd coursework (some online), field experiences, and both a 2-week and a 13-week practicum hosted by four local area school districts. Elementary and Secondary teacher candidates are together for some courses in both on-campus and in-school settings, and experienced tutors mentor secondary teacher candidates in selected specializations. UBC professors, and local experienced teachers and administrators provide leading-edge academic and professional coursework and mentoring.

WKTEP graduates are found teaching in BC schools, across Canada, and overseas. Others become educational leaders in public schools, alternative schools, or informal education settings such as museums and galleries. Join us and become part of a vibrant rural community rooted in a distinctive blend of cultures and situated within a picturesque mountain landscape.

Special Features of WKTEP

With the WKTEP program, individual attention, school–based instruction, and community interaction are emphasized. Secondary teacher candidates work with experienced teacher–tutors in their subject specializations.

Because most WKTEP instructors work full-time in schools, classes are often held in the evenings and on Saturdays.

UBC partners with four Kootenay area school districts that cover a large geographical area. Teacher candidates should be well–prepared for winter driving.

For more information, please contact our admissions officers or the WKTEP academic coordinator.
