Dr. Stan Kutcher Presentation on Mental Health Literacy

Thursday, September 21, 2017 (Elementary & Middle Years)
Scarfe 100
9:20 a.m. – 10:20 a.m.

Dr. Stan Kutcher, Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health and Professor in the Department of Mental Health at Dalhousie University, will be at the Faculty of Education this Fall to speak to teacher candidates about mental health literacy.

UBC’s Faculty of Education is co-developing with Western University, St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University an online mental health literacy curriculum for pre-service teachers led by Dr. Wendy Carr, Dr. Susan Rodger, Dr. Chris Gilham and Dr. Stan Kutcher.

MOOC: Bringing Mental Health to Schools

Dr. Kutcher is leading a self-guided, online course starting October 31. The MOOC is aimed at being a curriculum resource for grades 8–10.

Mental health literacy is the foundation for mental health promotion, prevention and care and can be successfully implemented through classroom based curriculum interventions that have been scientifically shown to improve mental health related outcomes for students and also for their teachers. A Canadian developed, nationally and internationally researched resource, the Guide, previously delivered only through face-to-face training is now available on-line through this UBC supported program. In this course, educators will learn how to apply this classroom ready, web-based, modular mental health curriculum resource (the Guide) as well as upgrade their own mental health literacy. Educators can then use this curriculum resource in their schools to successfully address mental health related curriculum outcomes designed to be delivered by usual classroom teachers to students in grades 8–10.
