Continuing Resource/LA/Foods Teacher in the Chilliwack School District Secondary (Social Studies)

David ShepherdI completed my practicum at Sardis Secondary in Chilliwack, having chosen Chilliwack as one of my preferences. Even though I was not sure why I chose it, I am very glad I did. I had an amazing experience as a teacher candidate, huge amounts of support from UBC, my Faculty Advisor was amazing, and many of the faculty at the University continued to stay in contact and offer support.

I did not immediately apply to the Chilliwack School District as I attempted to find work in the Lower Mainland after graduation, but when I did apply, I was hired and placed on the full-time Teacher on Call roster. This means I basically work everyday, often for extended periods, throughout the district. I absolutely love TOCing, getting to know different schools, staff and students across my district. This is especially helpful for me as a transplanted Vancouverite, getting used to life in the “country”. The variety in work has been amazing. I’ve had the opportunity to teach everything from Grade 12 History and Chemistry to Grade 2! As a Secondary specialist, that was an experience!

I absolutely love my job, but more importantly my profession, and could never have gotten to where I am without the education, support and encouragement I received as a UBC student.

My time as a BEd (Secondary) student were some of the best times of my life, and most stressful during practicum, but I came out of it with a better picture of myself, ready to begin my life as a teacher, and armed with a great number of friends and people I can now call colleagues. Thanks UBC Faculty of Education!
