About NITEP: Welcome from NITEP Director
We are at a very exciting point in our history as Aboriginal People. Not only are we taking control of our own lives and addressing the future of our communities, we are aware that the processes of self-determination can assist in resolving the many challenges currently facing our communities. Never has it been so apparent that our young people are such an important aspect to our future as we have a very young and growing population. Historically, education was used as a colonizing tool, but we now know that education can be that source of pride as well as the pinnacle in the transformation of our communities and ourselves.
We must now face our future with an education that addresses not only academic knowledge, but also the Indigenous knowledge of our ancestors. The philosophy and objectives of our program are to build on the Indigenous
knowledge and graduate Aboriginal people into the teaching profession so that they can enhance,
re-build, and re-establish sharing and caring communities
along with the technical and academic knowledge of our global society.
It is through the many partnerships and alliances with schools such as the University of British Columbia that many Aboriginal communities have made that make it possible to address the need for Aboriginal Teachers. If you are ready to meet the challenge, JOIN NITEP, The Quality Aboriginal Teacher Education Program here at the University of British Columbia!
