Current Students: Secondary Option Overview

During the program, NITEP secondary teacher candidates complete the course requirements necessary to present a teaching Major, or two teaching Concentrations, or a teaching Major and a Concentration as outlined for the admission requirements for the Secondary 12-month Option. See Secondary Teaching Subject Requirements. NITEP Secondary teacher candidates complete senior level academic coursework alongside Aboriginal content and Education courses and seminars in their 3rd and 4th year either at UBC or through their field centres. In 5th year, NITEP Secondary Option teacher candidates join the Bachelor of Education on UBC campus to complete professional requirements along with teacher candidates in UBC’s 12-month Bachelor of Education Secondary Option.

Upon successful completion of the NITEP Secondary Option, teacher candidates will graduate with a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree from the University of British Columbia and may apply for a Professional Teaching Certificate from the BC College of Teachers. (Teacher candidates may also graduate with a second degree if they decide to work with other faculties to fulfill degree requirements within the academic portion of the program.)

To qualify for the Bachelor of Education degree (Secondary), teacher candidates must normally complete all requirements within ten years of initial registration in the program. The total program may be completed in five academic years and a required summer session (term 3 or year 5). Some teacher candidates may find it convenient to take up to a total of 12 credits in other summer sessions during the first years of the program.

The program duration for Year 5 is September through August. Senior level academic coursework for your teaching specialization should be planned with your NITEP Coordinator before registering. Meet with your Coordinator regularly for advising on the appropriate academic , Aboriginal content and professional coursework during your program.
