This year, 14 BEd elementary and middle years teacher candidates will be engaged in 18 projects funded by the Emily Longworth Memorial Award, granted annually to help enhance teacher candidates’ school practicum experiences. As a result, 473 elementary-aged students will be impacted by the distribution of funding, which, this year, totals over $9000.
On April 19, 2016, the Longworth family (Tom, Connie, and their daughter Katie) visited Ecole Maillard Middle School, in the Coquitlam School District, for a special thank you and presentation from the Division 1 class, arranged by grant recipient Jessica Ramsey, a 2016 BEd Middle Years teacher candidate. The Emily Longworth Memorial Award grant allowed the opportunity for Jessica’s class to attend Cheakamus Centre, an overnight field school and environmental studies facility in Squamish (North Vancouver School District). At the centre, students participated in “Salmon Life Cycle” and “First Nations Bighouse” learning events.
Ecole Maillard students presented the Longworths with a thank you card and scrapbook of the day’s highlights, along with inspiring oral reports on what transpired throughout their day. Colleen Castonguay, UBC school advisor and Ecole Maillard Middle School teacher, welcomed the Longworths along with UBC faculty advisor, Genevieve McMahon, and Bette Shippam, Program Coordinator (TEO), who were also in attendance.
